Nine Year Plan
My topless wife
sits in the passenger side,
smokes the cigarette I rolled for Her
in our beaten-down-diesel-homestead.
She tells me
that when God goes to war against the Devil,
He listens to Her heartbeat on His iPod.
I’ve never been in the military
but I’ve got this purple heart.
One day my Father asked me
how I knew We could do forever.
I said “It’s simple,
She knows I’m dirty underneath the light”,
& I imagine that when God made Her,
He cussed for the first time.
See, We’ve seen every city from a rooftop..
without jumping
& I’ve given Her permission
to be complicated,
if Sunday mornings, it be okay to ask,
“Five more minutes.”
Our bodies are sore,
but there's a river for that.
We drive the 178 West.
My left hand, a kite,
my right hand, in Hers,
my knee, the captain.
Drive fast.
